Nazionale serves light meals and snacks in a relaxed informal setting
with stained-glass windows and light wood panels, opening out onto
a terrace with views of Rome. The reception rooms showcase the hotel's
original Art Nouveau details, and guests can unwind with a drink
beneath the famous glass dome of the hotel lobby. The hotel lounge
offers guests the complimentary use of a personal computer with
high-speed Internet access and a colour printer. Four spacious conference
rooms, the largest of which is able to accommodate up to 120 people,
offer facilities for banquets and seminars. Multilingual staff at
the 24-hour front desk are available to help book tickets for the
theatre and concerts, make reservations for restaurants, stamp and
post mail, and exchange currency. Access to a nearby gymnasium is
provided for a fee. The beautiful Trevi fountain and the Spanish
Steps are one kilometre from the hotel, and the ancient Pantheon
building is a kilometre and a half away. Rome Fiumicino Airport
is 45 minutes by car, 35 kilometres (22 miles) from the hotel.
The Colosseum or Flavian Amphitheater was begun by Vespasian, inaugurated
by Titus in 80 A.D. and completed by Domitian. Located on marshy
land between the Esquiline and Caelian Hills, it was the first permanent
amphitheater to be built in Rome. Its monumental size and grandeur
as well as its practical and efficient organization for producing
spectacles and controlling the large crowds make it one of the great
architectural monuments achieved by the ancient Romans. The amphitheater
is a vast ellipse with tiers of seating for 50,000 spectators around
a central elliptical arena. Below the wooden arena floor, there
was a complex set of rooms and passageways for wild beasts and other
provisions for staging the spectacles. Eighty walls radiate from
the arena and support vaults for passageways, stairways and the
tiers of seats. At the outer edge circumferential arcades link each
level and the stairways between levels. .
